Face Oils vs. Serums: What’s the Difference and Do You Need Both?
Walk down any skincare aisle and you’ll quickly discover countless products promising healthy, glowing skin. Among the most common are facial serums and facial oils.
But what exactly is the difference?
And perhaps more importantly, do you really need both?
The answer may surprise you.
What Is a Serum?
Serums are lightweight formulas designed to deliver hydration and beneficial ingredients directly to the skin.
Most serums are water-based and contain humectants that attract moisture, helping the skin feel plump, refreshed, and balanced.
Ingredients commonly found in serums include:
- Hyaluronic acid
- Niacinamide
- Panthenol
- Peptides
- Ceramides
Because of their lightweight texture, serums absorb quickly and are often applied immediately after cleansing.
Think of a serum as a drink of water for thirsty skin.
What Is a Facial Oil?
Facial oils work differently.
Instead of drawing water into the skin, oils help nourish and support the skin barrier while sealing in moisture already present.
Beautiful botanical oils provide fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins that help soften and replenish the complexion.
Common oils include:
- Squalane
- Jojoba oil
- Rosehip oil
- Pomegranate seed oil
- Sea buckthorn oil
- Evening primrose oil
Think of facial oils as the protective blanket that helps keep hydration from escaping.
Do You Need Both?
Not necessarily.
Some people thrive with a simple facial oil alone.
Others prefer the lightweight hydration of a serum.
But when used together, serums and oils complement one another beautifully.
A serum provides hydration.
A facial oil helps lock that hydration into the skin.
Together, they create a balanced routine that supports softness, comfort, and a healthy-looking glow.
Which Comes First?
If you’re using both, apply them in this order:
- Cleanse
- Mist (optional)
- Serum
- Facial oil
- Sunscreen (daytime)
A simple rule to remember is:
Water first. Oils last.
Simplicity Is Beautiful
Healthy skin doesn’t require complicated routines or dozens of products.
Sometimes a few thoughtfully chosen products are all that’s needed.
At Sage Willow Designs, I believe skincare should feel peaceful, nourishing, and uncomplicated.
Whether you prefer a hydrating serum, a botanical facial oil, or the combination of both, the goal remains the same:
To support healthy skin while creating moments of beauty and intention in everyday life.
Because skincare is about more than appearance.
It’s about caring for ourselves with gratitude and grace.
With gratitude,
